Polesdon Lacey Shakespeare

A registered educational charity, staffed by volunteers, the group performs Shakespeare’s comedies at Polesden Lacey with simple staging in the open air, just as Shakespeare intended, with tickets priced to make performances attractive to families, with all under 16s going free.

The society is committed to making The Bard’s plays as exciting and innovative as they were in his day, expanding interest in Shakespeare and providing educational opportunities in the form of free master classes, workshops and specially adapted plays for schools. From beginnings in 1951 the company draws on the very best amateur, semi-professional and professional actors from a wide area to produce Shakespeare to the very highest standard.

The main play takes place in July, over two weekends, and a recent addition to the repertoire is Pop Up Shakespeare, which takes place in June, again over two weekends. Short family friendly scenes and a mini-play are staged around the gardens, with audience participation (especially from children) positively encouraged.
